Now we know that we said beach waves are a trend of the past, but sometimes life calls for a little throwback to reminisce.
Beach waves are the classic signature look for the summer dating back through the ages. Whether you have long locks or an edgy bob, you can master the beach wave look with some of our simple tips:
1. INVEST IN A GOOD SEA SALT SPRAY
This is the cardinal rule of any beach wave ‘do. Before sea salt spray was sold, the Sassinistas before us would literally go to the beach and use the salt water in their hair - total mermaid chic. Sure summer is all about the au naturale, but there are now sprays that contain shine serum or conditioning to keep your hair tussled and smooth. Here are some sprays that THoP love for our summer tussles:
Organix Moroccan Sea Salt Spray
Not Your Mother's Beach Babe
John Frieda Beach Blonde Sea Waves
2. CHOOSE YOUR TOOLS WISELY
If you’re handy with a blow dryer or curling iron, then this will make doing beach waves a lot easier. No chancing on air-drying, no problem.
BLOW DRYING
If you’re one of those people who always have a good hair day (we’re jealous), the fastest and easiest way to get beach waves is to use a diffuser. THoP suggests using the Babybliss protitanum diffuser. Put some mousse or sea salt spray in your hair and diffuse until satisfied. Shake it out to tussle your hair up. It’s really that easy!
CURLING
For long hair, we suggest using a three-barrel curling iron. Revlon's three barrel curler is a great one that is also cost effective! You can leave it on your locks a little longer to make tighter waves or run your hair through quickly to create a looser look.
For short hair, it is better to use a clipless iron. These are also called wands and they are great for all hair types, but we suggest this for short hair because it’s better for adding length and texture. No one wants to end up with Shirley Temple’s “do”!
There are different ways to hold the wand to make different kinds of curls. If you hold it vertically, you’ll be left with longer and thinner waves. Holding it horizontally will give you short and flirty waves with a little more bounce. Its good to alternate how you hold the wand to give your beach waves a messier look.
3. EMBRACE WHAT YOU GOT
If you don’t have the time or patience to work with an iron, take what you have and make it happen! For those with straight hair, twist your hair into buns before you go to sleep. Take them out in the morning and run your fingers through your hair.
If you have curly hair, you’re already half way there! Braid your hair for longer, more consistent waves.
Those who already have wavy hair don’t have to do much to get the perfect beach waves. Just add the sea salt spray and go.
