PUT YOUR BEST HAND FORWRD

THE SAYING GOES: “PUT YOUR BEST FOOT FORWARD.” BUT IN THOSE INITIAL SEVEN SECONDS YOU’RE MAKING A FIRST IMPRESSION, NO ONE IS LOOKING AT YOUR PEDICURE. INSTEAD, COMPLEMENT YOUR STRONG HANDSHAKE WITH MANICURED NAILS. HERE’S HOW TO ACHIEVE THAT FRESH-OUT-OF-THE-SALON LOOK AT HOME:

Stay trimmed

Start your look with even and smooth nails. Trim them down to the length of your liking and smooth the edges with a file. Be sure to move the file in one, even motion. Filing back and forth will put too much pressure on the nail bed and can cause breakage.

PUSH IT REAL GOOD

If Salt-N-Pepa taught us anything, it’s this. Push it – do not cut your cuticles. This can cause not only damage to the nail bed, but can allow bacteria to grow. Instead, using warm water and an anti-bacterial soap, soak your nails to soften the cuticles. Then, using an orange stick – a wooden stick specifically for manicuring – or a metal pusher, gently push cuticles back.

Equality is key

When it comes to polish, thin and even coats are the best way to get a professional-looking manicure. Wipe excess polish off of the brush before application, then starting at the cuticle, in the middle of the nail begin applying the polish. Then, work out to the sides. This will allow the polish to dry evenly.

Stay hydrated

Just like you apply lotion to the rest of your body, your nails – more specifically, your cuticles – need to be moisturized too. Using an oil, or being sure to massage your everyday lotion onto your cuticles, is key to keeping your nails healthy and strong. Do this on a daily basis.

Top it off

The last step to creating a professional manicure is by sealing your look. Using clear polish, apply a top coat to the entire nail. Then, to make your look last, run the tip of the brush over the tip of your nail.

XO,
EMILY
